This week the solstices occur, winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere. The solstices are times of celebrations, some religious or spiritual. Others just good times and parties. In the northern hemisphere, legend says that very early Christian “fathers” moved the date of Jesus’s birth to coincide with solstice festivals in the far north of Europe. Solstice festivals were pagan events, and the move of Christmas to follow by a very few days was an attempt to neutralize these pagan festivals. One wonders if this move was successful considering the nature of Christmas in the 21st Century.

Islamic festivals, like the Eid al Fitr and the Eid al Adha are based on a different calendar therefore they rotate around the calendar we use and are not associated with any season.

What festivals do you celebrate that are based on a calendar?
