The current very popular movie, Victoria and Abdul, is not only a beautiful, well made, well acted movie, it also presents an interesting and positive view of Islam that was often misunderstood then just as it is misunderstood now. The depiction of women in burkas and veils represents a cultural issue as much as a religious issue. Christian women of the era also wore very modest clothing, albeit no veils covering faces, in the name of Christianity. Today, many Muslim women realize that burkas and especially face-covering veils are cultural and not essential behavior patterns of the Islamic religion. In many countries, notably European ones, women are prohibited from wearing face veils, although burkas and headscarves are forbidden, for obvious safety and security reasons. Wearing a face veil in a bank, for example, creates the same reaction as men wearing ski masks in a bank. Your thoughts?
